Week Forty-Eight 2013 – 52 Weeks of Lawn & Garden Maintenance – What is the TRUE history of Thanksgiving?

This time of year always amazes – Yes there is the typical hustle and bustle and yes it can be hectic and all that other jazz, what catches my eye is the cooperation.

Think about it…really stop for a moment – you can do it – and think about it. It seems, this week, everyone is on the same track. Now the day varies of course, some gather sooner, some later and some not at all. We all celebrate or give thanks in a different way, but listen, how many times have you heard “Have a Happy Thanksgiving”?

We have all heard over and over the story of the pilgrims and the first “Thanksgiving” & thanks to The Old Farmers 2013 Almanac my eyes have been opened. I myself like to understand why we do what we do; you can check these facts for yourself.

  • There is no historical documentation of a Turkey being cooked, eaten – for that matter even present during those 3 days of celebration1621 – Old Farmers Almanac

  •  We called it the first Thanksgiving though they simply called it a Harvest Festival because the first harvest was so successful Governor William Bradford ordered a feast to celebrate – Old Farmers Almanac

  • Historians can only document with certainty two items – undisclosed fowl, more than likely Quail from the Pilgrims & venison brought by the Wampanoag. – Old Farmers Almanac

Now with this in mind, let us go celebrate our harvest festivals and be thankful, as we should, for all of the little details as well as the big that make our lives what we cherish. Those we love and know as well as those we have not met who add to our quality of life – the ones who keep us in power, water, heat, bring food to our grocery so we may celebrate, those who create the spaces we celebrate in –the builders, the dreamers the innovators and of course the noticers.

Maybe we could all start a new tradition and throw out those miserable New Years’ resolutions – it is time for a change – we should start a Harvest Celebration Thanks-solution that whether rich or poor, Jew or Greek, free or bond – we will celebrate Thanksgiving everyday!

You must admit a Thanks-solution sounds like much more fun than a New Years resolution – Be Thankful for all of those around you every day – whether you think you like them or not – if it has been said once it has been said a thousand times and haven’t we also heard anything worth hearing bears repeating.

May your Harvest Celebration be blessed and may the first gift you acquire on Black Friday be the gift of your own Thanks-solution!!

This week – in the garden or out of the garden- Be kind to yourself and all you meet – we are all really in this together!
