Enjoy the Fruits of Your Labor
Garden parties are always something to look forward to. A quiet gathering of friends, an intimate meal or a good ole southern bash, whichever the case you will always find good treats and great entertainment!
The Ohio Department of Agriculture released the news last year. They have discovered through many years of testing that it is really not a good idea to cultivate your soil. This is a general statement – of course there are purposes for tilling such as adding amendments to newly installed planting beds or preparing a good medium to install a lawn of sod or seed.
There is this song the youth once sang…sign, sign, everywhere a sign. That song seemed to ring so true then. Now? Not too long ago it was a trend to repeat, “Here’s your sign”. Ah! How much time elapsed before we are now looking for a sign and not becoming inundated with them…. there is a demand for more! (My question: Have we begun to eliminate street signs thinking everyone is wired to GPS? Who needs street signs anyway? I do?)
We have a very interesting blog for you this week. First we want to remind you to re-apply your grub treatment to your lawn this month. This will prevent the female beetles from laying eggs in your lawn, which will hatch out as grubs and feed on the tender root system. Also remember to feed any struggling, thin or recently pruned trees, shrubs, perennials especially the knockout roses if you have trimmed them as of late.
Now the Big Ash Tree…..
July 4th on a Thursday, who would have guessed – does that give you an extended weekend? What about all of this rain? Can they set fireworks off in the rain? Will they work? If so, who will stand in the rain to watch them? Where did the sun go? This is abominable….
Finally!!! Some of you are saying – This feels like summer! It is, as of last Friday! Isn’t it funny, even though we in Ohio are ready to pull out the raincoat or sweaters at any moment, we do enjoy when our seasons are on schedule and predictable. Yes, for those of you new to Northeast Ohio, we do have predictable weather patterns…. sometimes. When you have been planted in Northeast Ohio for a while then you have been around long enough to know the patterns. This my friends, outside of that bizarre once in a decade freeze, is a typical Northeast transition from spring to summer…cold and rainy one day…cook your tulips off the next. Summer has arrived!
Slugs eating your peppers, slugs eating your Hosta, thank god you are not in Florida or you might find them eating your house. Haven’t heard of this one yet? Google slugs in Florida – you will be stunned.
This week are you playing catch up with your lawn and garden?
The trees and shrubs are wanting fed again. You can feed your annuals weekly if you can keep up with the growth. Apply your dry lawn fertilizer and use a liquid weed treatment on a dry day. I have a feeling fleas are going to be a nuisance this year so you may want to treat your lawn with a multi action pest preventer and treat for grubs at the same time. Make sure to water your application in well to get a good start – unless Mother Nature continues to do it for us.
