Week Six 2013 – 52 Weeks of Lawn & Garden Maintenance – Fun in the snow with Raspberries!

Gorgeous Raspberries

North East Ohio, what could you possibly accomplish in the garden this week with four and upward inches of snow in some areas?

If you live in North East Ohio, or at least if you’ve lived here long enough to understand our winters, which put quite frankly, are mostly spontaneous weather events, you are prepared for anything! You name it, we have had it – drought – floods – tornadoes – blizzards – From the east we receive far long lashings of hurricanes as well as tropical storms and cyclones. Then the north wind blows – You along the Snow Belt can relate to that! Cold weather does not deter a North East Ohio Gardener.

Grab those Carhardt overalls – we know you have them – your thermal bootsyour winter cap & gloves – Your thermal jacket, yep we are bundling up like the little brother in A Christmas Story and getting to the raspberry patch! Remember a sharp pair of pruners.

Once you are at the raspberry patch look for last years fruiting canes, (these of course are the canes that had fruit on them last year). You will want to use your pruners to remove these canes. The new canes that had grown last year are the ones that will bear fruit for you this year and the ones you will be trimming out of the patch this time next year. You may want to trim the patch down to 4 feet or so for easier picking this season as the canes will grow out laterally to produce fruit.

This week is the perfect week for playing in the raspberry patch! The time you sow into your garden now, will be time well spent and your labors will be rewarded with abundant fruit!

Tomorrow the sun will raise its head again a warm wind will blow up from the south and we will don t-shirts and tennis shoes anticipating raspberry sauces, jams and other warm weather delights.
