Week Fourteen 2013 – 52 Weeks of Lawn & Garden Maintenance – Will the temperatures stay above 50 degrees? That will be the key to your crabgrass prevention. If you are feeling frisky – This week fertilize your trees, shrubs and the lawn.

Crab, Grass

Last year was quite a surprise to all of us in Northeast Ohio as the temperatures soared through the month of March. Many gardeners I have spoken to recently, each proclaimed that this time last year they had already mowed their lawns – TWICE! Last years weather was quite an experience for us here in Northeast Ohio – and will probably be the topic of much discussion as we travel through our season this year. I must say, this year has started out as a typical Ohio spring…snow…then no snow…sunshine…then no sunshine. Last week a few of us in the green industry laughed at how one of the days had temperatures to mimic winter, spring, summer and, if a couple of the leaves that are still Hanging onto the Pin Oaks from last year had dropped, we could say we had fall! I love Ohio!!

Now let’s talk about these temperatures in regards to crabgrass! Did you know the soil temperature need to reach 50 degrees for at least 4-5 consecutive days before crabgrass will germinate?  Yea, that is why the crabgrass treatments did not work last year, most people applied their crabgrass prevention at the end of March in 2012. Why didn’t it work? Let’s think about it…when did the soil temperatures reach 50 degrees for over five days last year? Well definitely before the end of March – especially if we were already mowing our lawns – TWICE. Last year was hopefully a valuable lesson in crabgrass prevention…do not watch the calendar…watch the thermometer. My fertilizing company arrived last week to apply their wares to my tired lawn, crabgrass control included. I have a strong notion they will be receiving a call from me about crabgrass prevention. Timing is key, wrong timing and it is for naught!

Try some dry lawn fertilizer this week. Unsure of what to use, get Greenview’s program.

Give your trees and shrubs a good feeding – they are going to need it.

I am holding my breath for this season. Last year was so hot and dry. We came through the winter of 2011-2012 in drought conditions and continued through the summer of 2012 this way.  I have a strong feeling we have not seen the last of the toll this has taken on our large trees and established plant life. I recommend we all keep a close eye on our gardens this year, feed our plantings regularly, water as needed and never stop loving the garden. If funds are short, do not fret…. we are tenacious and so are our plantings…sometimes we have to return to that old adage and let tomorrow take care of itself.

Maybe though, this is the week to get out with some friends or just to you. Inhale deeply, smile wildly and laugh just because you can! Your garden would want you to enjoy yourself….and it will still be there next week, waiting for your attention – yearning for your touch – anticipating all of the loveliness it can share with you!

Just be Free!!
