Tom Dayton asked me to be a guest, this past Saturday morning, on his radio show – (On 1590 WAKR – Ready Set Grow – Every Saturday 8:00 to 10:00 a.m. with Tom Dayton) and many people were excited to talk about plants and color whilst the snow floated down in a soft fury.

We spoke about many types of plants – and how important planning is in the long run – what a difference planning makes when your project can build upon years.

We spoke about Witch Hazels and their bounty of interest going into and coming out of winter – and again a Helleborus for this week – the Green Corsican which under the right conditions can bloom from February through April.

Erica Flowering Heath Darley Dale should still boast some blossom through May and many of the Callunas or Heathers have a brilliant display of foliage ranging from Aureas vibrant red to Martha Herman’s bronze green.

Adding grasses such as Miscanthus zebrinus, porcupine, or Morning light can add some interest and depth to the garden as well.

A gardens grand mercy is in its acceptance of change. I sometimes think that is why we can get lost in the garden – we share this kinship in knowing tomorrow the garden will be different, ah and so will we.

Subtle changes that happen through time or the monumental renovations chosen to undertake. Your space of meditation in the shade garden that was destroyed when that great shade tree, who had held up to so many storms could not hold up to one more. In that loss, that soft shift in the season we realize we have not lost part of the garden, we have merely opened our hearts to experience more.
